How many pieces of siding come in a box — and what it weighs
Siding is priced by the square but delivered by the box, and the two units meet on your driveway. Here is what is actually inside a carton of vinyl siding — how many pieces, how many square feet, and how much it weighs — plus the equivalents for the materials that are not boxed at all.
The short answer
A standard carton of vinyl siding covers 2 squares — about 200 sq ft of wall. For the most common profile, double-4″ lap, that works out to roughly 24 panels per box, each panel about 12 ft 6 in long. A carton like that typically weighs on the order of 80–120 lb. All three numbers are labeled planning typicals: manufacturers pack cartons differently, and the printed label on the box you actually buy is the figure that governs your order. But if you are sketching a material list or wondering whether a delivery fits in a pickup, these are the right numbers to sketch with.
Pieces per box is arithmetic, not a mystery
The piece count is not a convention somebody chose — it falls out of the geometry. One panel’s installed coverage is its length times the profile height it exposes on the wall:
pieces per box = box coverage ÷ (panel length × profile height)
A double-4″ panel exposes two 4-inch courses — 8 inches, or 0.667 ft — and runs 12.5 ft long, so each panel covers 12.5 × 0.667 ≈ 8.3 sq ft. Divide the carton’s 200 sq ft by 8.3 and you get ≈ 24 panels. Run the same arithmetic on a double-5″ profile (10 inches of exposure per panel) and each panel covers about 10.4 sq ft, so the same 2-square carton holds ≈ 19–20 panels. Fewer, taller pieces; identical coverage. This is why “how many pieces” has no single answer while “how many square feet” almost always does: the carton is packed to a coverage target, and the piece count is whatever the profile makes of it.
Typical carton contents by vinyl profile
- Double-4″ lap — ~24 panels × 12 ft 6 in ≈ 200 sq ft (2 squares).
- Double-4.5″ dutch lap — ~22 panels, same 2-square carton.
- Double-5″ lap — ~19–20 panels, same 2-square carton.
- Insulated vinyl — same coverage logic with a foam backer laminated on; fewer, stiffer, heavier pieces per carton. Check the label — packaging varies more here than anywhere else.

The materials that are not boxed
Vinyl is the boxed material; the others ship in different units, and translating between them is the same coverage arithmetic. Fiber cement is sold by the individual plank, strapped in bunks: a 12 ft plank with 8¼ in nominal height installs at about 7 in of exposure, so it covers ≈ 7 sq ft on the wall — call it 14–15 planks per square. Cedar shingles and shakes come in bundles: at typical sidewall exposure a bundle covers about 25 sq ft, so 4 bundles make a square. Steel and aluminum lap is sold by the piece or the square depending on the supplier. In every case the unit changes but the identity does not: units = ceil( area × (1 + waste) ÷ coverage per unit ).
How much does a box of siding weigh?
Weight, like piece count, is coverage times a density: box weight ≈ covered area × material weight per sq ft. Standard hollow vinyl runs about 0.4–0.6 lb/sq ft, so a 2-square carton lands at roughly 80–120 lb — awkward more than heavy, at 12½ ft long; plan on two people or a shoulder carry. Insulated vinyl roughly doubles the per-foot weight, which is exactly why its cartons are sometimes packed with fewer pieces. Fiber cement is the heavyweight at ~2.3–2.6 lb/sq ft: a single 12 ft plank weighs about 20–23 lb, and a square of planks approaches 250 lb — a fact worth knowing before you offer to carry it upstairs. A bundle of cedar shingles typically weighs 30–40 lb. None of this changes what you order; all of it changes how you stage the delivery.
Worked example: from wall to driveway
Take the reference house used across this site: 1,336 sq ft net siding area. With a 10% waste factor that is 1,469.6 sq ft to buy, and in double-4″ vinyl at 200 sq ft per box: ceil(1,469.6 ÷ 200) = 8 boxes — about 192 panels, and at ~100 lb per carton about 800 lb of material arriving on the truck. The same wall in cedar shingles is ceil(1,336 × 1.15 ÷ 25) = 62 bundles at the higher shake waste factor — a very different pile for the same house, which is the point of doing the units math before delivery day.
Order by coverage, count pieces second
Because piece counts vary by profile and manufacturer, the reliable way to order is always coverage-first: net area, plus waste, divided by the labeled coverage of the unit, rounded up. Common mistakes with boxed siding
- Assuming every box is 2 squares. Most vinyl cartons are, but not all — specialty profiles and insulated lines vary. The label wins.
- Ordering by piece count from a different profile. 24 pieces of double-5″ is ~20% more wall than 24 pieces of double-4″. Coverage, not pieces.
- Forgetting the waste factor before the ceiling. The box count is ceil(area × (1 + waste) ÷ 200) — waste goes inside the ceiling, not after it.
- Ignoring weight on delivery day. Eight cartons of vinyl is a manageable 800 lb; the same wall in fiber cement is well over a ton and wants a staged drop.
